Dave Chappelle’s newest Netflix special “8:46” was posted to the “Netflix Is A Joke” YouTube channel in the early hours on Friday. He not only addressed the death of George Floyd, but he also criticized a large chunk of the media reaction to it.
This Netflix Special is not another premier series. It was caused and catalyzed by a horrific event, probably one of the darkest in the history of the United States.
The title “8:46” is basically the time when the cruel Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin had his knee on Floyd’s neck, a horrendous and inhumane moment that was captured on video.
Dave Chappelle’s Statement
According to him, as we watched that tape, we understood quite quickly, that man named Floyd knew he was going to die.
People watched it in awe and filmed it with adrenaline rushing through their veins. People showed how good of a spectator they can be.
According to him, the policemen throughout the country have had their hands in their pockets. He said that they felt like they would go on and be left unscathed for all the sin and brutality they have inflicted on their land. He expressed his curiosity about what these policemen were trying to signify and show to the world.
After the incident, CNN Anchorperson Don Lemon commented on celebrities who were not raising their voices against it. He called out black artists and celebrities mostly.
Chappelle criticized Don Lemon for his remarks. Don Lemon had addressed the silence of black artists and that they did not raise their voice for their community.
Chappelle being a black celebrity himself fired back and told that this is not the way to address the national crisis.
Don Lemon’s Response
To Chappelle’s fiery reaction, Lemon passed some comments. He said that he understood what Chappelle had to say. But at the same time, it is not to be forgotten that every man and woman should use his or her platform for the sake of speaking the truth.
