After getting canceled the last year due to Covid-19, Tony Awards 2021 was organized at Grand Winter Garden Theatre on 26 September 2021. Here are six spotlight moments from the event.

Mouline Rouge sweeps the award show with 10 awards

Mouline Rouge – an adapted musical of an Oscar-winning film, The Jukebox swept the Tony Awards 2021 with 10 trophies.

The Jukebox itself was a prolific celebration of the LGBTQ+ community and Mouline Rouge is no exception.

It was nominated in 14 categories including best musical, best costume, best scenery, best choreography, and more.

During the acceptance speech for the best musical, the show’s producer, Camren Pavlovic stated that “I feel that every show of the last season deserves to be thought of as best musical,” and it was “odd” to pick one show as the best musical.

The Inheritance – A story about Gay Aids becomes the best play

The Inheritance bagged an award for the Best New Play at this year’s Tony awards making Lopez, the first Latin American to win in this category.

Apart from this, The Inheritance also won into other categories as well including, Best Performance by an Actress, Best Director, and Best Actor.

Lopez shared his feelings regarding writing the play initially, he said “I felt divorced from my own history.” He continued,  “And it was my attempt to understand it, to make contact with it and to make peace in some ways with the parts of it that I had a less than ideal relationship with.”

Lauren Patten wins the best actress for Jagged Little Pill

Lauren Patten was all praise to her Bi and trans colleagues after winning for the Best Actress in a Featured Role for Alanis Morissette show amid a controversy going over her character. She thanked her colleagues to help her understand her character, Jo and was very much appreciative of them during her acceptance speech. “And first and foremost I want to thank my trans and non-binary friends and colleagues who have engaged with me in difficult conversations, that have joined me in dialogue about my character Jo,” said Lauren.

Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth reunite for a performance

The reunion of Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth shocked the world and at the same time put everyone in awe with their emotional performance on the song: “For Good”.

Both artists co-starred in a popular Broadway Musical, “The Wicked,” in 2003. Idina Menzel rocked the stage in a long-sleeved black dress, while Kristin adorned a hot pink dress for the performance. 

Antony Pascal and Anthony Repp reunion

The old Broadway pair, Pascal and Repp, who essayed Roger and Mark in the 25 years old Broadway play, “The Rent,” reunited for a song while the audience watched them in awe. They performed a hit song, “What you own.”

It was indeed a treat to one’s eyes and ears as the thunderous applause was received by them at the end of the performance.

Pink was an unofficial color for this year’s Tony Awards 2021 and the celebrities made sure to adorn themselves in various eye-catchy shades of this electrifying color. It wouldn’t be wrong to state that the red carpet looks at Tony Awards were a treat to the eyes.
