The Weeknd hinted at “pulling a Ye” recently on his social media account by teasing his fans that he might drop his last name like the famous rapper Kanye West and resort to his original name Abel.
Abel Makkonen Tesfaye is the real name of The Weeknd. He tweeted that he might “pull a YE” by dropping his last name legally and resorting to his name ABEL only.
He tweeted “I feel like I should change my stage name to ABEL at this point lol.”
In a separate tweet, he teased that “maybe pull a YE and just legally change my name to ABEL. no last name. Like Madonna or Cher or Prince. I don’t know, it seems like a lot.”
By “pulling a YE ” he gave a subtle reference to Kanye West who officially and legally changed his name back in October of 2021. The judge approved his request for Kanye to legally change his name to simply Ye from Kanye Omari West.
The musician further teased his friends by stating that he will be trying out more possible names such as “ABEL formally known as The Weeknd ?”
Famous producer Mike WILL Made-it gave his blessings to the singer by responding to one of his tweets “I f–k w it.”
The blinding lights singer received approval from John Legend as well as he approved his name stating “ABEL is dope”
The Weeknd retweeted john legend’s post with the caption “I’m tempted”
In an interview last august, The Weeknd had explained that Abel and The Weeknd are two different personalities. He loves both but now he has made peace with both of them as they are very different from each other.
“I feel like I already do. My fans don’t call me The Weeknd. They just call me Abel,” he said. “It’s a tricky thing, but I think the name The Weeknd holds such a legacy right now. The story of that name isn’t done yet.”
He said back in 2014 that he hated his name back then and wanted to try a stage name that would make him appear cool with the masses.
“I hated my name at the time though so I tried it as a stage name,” he wrote on Reddit. “It sounded cool.”
The Weeknd recently bagged the best melodic rap performance at the Grammy Awards held this Sunday.
The singer also received a distinction for his work with Kanye West for his album Donda’s song hurricane along with Lil baby yet he was not present at the ceremony as he boycotted the awards after being snubbed for his record-breaking album blinding nights back in 2020.
