Bellator 244 finally took place on 21st August after being delayed for a good three and a half months due to the Coronavirus outbreak. The match was initially supposed to take place on 9th May at Bellator 242 between two fan favorites, Vadim Nemkov and Ryan Bader.
The scheduled match was a light heavyweight championship between the number one competitor Vadim and the two-division champion Bader. Due to the postponement, the match was even more anticipated than before and everyone tuned in to watch the engaging fight held in Connecticut at the Mohegan Sun Area.
The match was a long and intense one with Nemkov having more success than his opponent, even though Bader tried his best to put up a competitive fight in Round 1. Bader got in one good punch in the first round, however, in Round 2, Bader was not able to keep up with the Russian’s quick footwork and took major hits.
The strikes became so brutal that the referee was forced to stop the match and give a technical knockout win to Nemkov. This made the 28-year-old the new champion of the Bellator light heavyweight category, a win he was ecstatic about as he displayed in the ring.
A lot of MMA professionals took to Twitter to react to Nemkov’s surprising big win against the former two-time winner. Mike Bohn acknowledged Nemkov’s victory saying that he completely brutalized Bader to the point that he could not even stand up despite the referee giving him many chances.
Retired MMA professional Ben Askren and Dan Tom also tweeted that they were surprised the referee waited so long before declaring a TKO. Jon Jones congratulated the Russian fighter on being the new light heavyweight champion.
James Vick, Jay Glazer, and Danny Segura also expressed how impressed they were with Nemkov’s win and his solid performance throughout. Matheus Aquino commented on Bader’s poor performance saying that he was very awful in the ring.
Gerald Harris tweeted that he somehow saw Bader’s defeat coming as Nemkov wanted it more, but he believes that the former winner is a beast nonetheless. Dan Tom also expressed his concern for Bader saying he hopes he is going to be all right after those hits.
