A renowned track and cross country star has died, and the University of Wisconsin community is grieving her loss.

The family of Sarah Shulze, 21, reported her death by suicide on April 13.

“Balancing athletics, academics and the demands of everyday life overwhelmed her in a single, desperate moment,” Shulze’s family said. “Like you, we are shocked and grief-stricken while holding on tightly to all that Sarah was.”

In a statement published on Friday, Wisconsin authorities hailed the cherished student as a lovely person and a renowned student-athlete.

“The Wisconsin Athletics community is heartbroken by the unexpected passing of Sarah Shulze,” the university said. “We extend our deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to Sarah’s family, friends and Badger teammates during this extraordinarily difficult time.”

After Shulze’s passing, social media was flooded with condolences.

Track athlete Georgia Ellenwood also wrote a heartfelt condolence on the school’s Instagram page. She is survived by her sisters and parents.
