The US Attorney General William Barr, who is a loyal Trump supporter, has resigned. A few weeks ago he had opposed the president’s voter fraud claims, explaining that the justice department had not found any evidence of it.
Throughout his tenure, Barr had overlooked commitment to the law and undermined the independence of the Department of Justice to propagate Trump’s political agenda.
Trump announced the resignation through a tweet, praising Barr, and their relationship. This was tweeted right after the Electoral College officially confirmed Biden’s victory with a tally of 306 to 232 electoral votes. This brings an end to Trump’s efforts to change the outcome of the elections, which were based on unsubstantiated claims.

This announcement has resulted in a surge in threats and protestors preparing to demonstrate outside the statehouse where the final vote tally took place.
Trump also posted Barr’s resignation letter in which the attorney general had profusely praised the president, claiming that he had been strong and persistent while dealing with attacks. He also went on to claim that none of the tactics that his contenders used were considered unlawful, even if they were abusive and manipulative.
He added that Trump was able to achieve so much despite the constant, unsparing attacks and not many could have persevered and then also move forward with optimism to provide for the country.
The deputy attorney general Jeff Rosen, who Trump has also repeatedly praised, will be promoted to the position of the attorney general and Richard Donoghue from Rosen’s office will be appointed as deputy attorney general.
At the beginning of the month, Barr appeared in an interview with the Associated Press where he contradicted Trump’s claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 election.
Barr talked about Trump’s legal team’s claims that the election machines were programmed to distort the results of the election. He explained that the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security have investigated the matter and they have not found any evidence for this claim.
He also continued to explain that these allegations should be presented to the court in civil lawsuits and the state and local officials would be responsible for overseeing them, not the justice department. He added that people want DOJ to investigate anything that they don’t like.
Trump and his team were enraged by these comments as their lawsuits had been dismissed by state and local officials repeatedly.
