Pete Davidson, the host of the famous show ‘Saturday Night Live’ has received immense criticism about the jokes and comments he made about a congressional candidate from Texas, Dan Crenshaw. The segment was a focus feature on the first impressions made by the midterm election candidates on Pete Davidson himself.
Davidson made comments and jokes about various candidates which were based entirely on their appearances on the show’s mock news program called the ‘Weekend Update”. He made fun of the Florida Gov. Rick Scott who is Republican, and running for the Senate, as well as Rep. Peter King R-N.Y and the Republican, Crenshaw. The show also displayed a picture of Crenshaw wearing an eye patch while Davidson commented on it saying that the guy is ‘kind of cool’. He went on to say that it may be surprising to know that Dan Crenshaw is a congressional candidate from Texas and not a hit man from a porno movie. Moreover, Davidson added that the candidate lost his eye in a war or ‘whatever’ while trying to hold back his laughter. Majority of the people who watched the show took offence in the joke and found it highly insensitive to the service that Crenshaw had given to the country as well as to his injury he received while on duty. He has served in the Navy for about a decade and retired as a lieutenant commander from the SEALs in 2016. Crenshaw was serving in Afghanistan when an improvised explosive device caused him to lose one of his eyes.
Crenshaw on the other hand, responded on twitter on the jokes being made on him in a diplomatic manner saying that he tries hard not to offend others and he tries even harder not to get offended himself. He did however say that the Saturday Night Live Show should be more sensitive to the veterans and not use their ‘wounds’ as punch lines for cracking jokes. The SNL show, and NBC however declined to comment.
Many found the show offensive and took to twitter to criticize the jokes and comments made on the SNL. Jack Pandol, who is a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee demanded that the NBC and Pete Davidson should immediately apologize to Dan as well as to the many other military families and veterans who watch this show every weekend and ‘they are certainly not laughing’.
Others like Marsha Blackburn and Sonny Bunch to name a few, also criticized these non-humorous jokes that were cracked and demanded that they apologize to a war hero and his family as the jokes were not funny in the least, and hurt the sentiments of the veterans and their families who have served the nation.
