The brainchild of Kaname Hayashi, the newest creation from Groove X is a robot that doesn’t offer any practical functionality. This might sound odd, but Lovot is designed to provide affection and encourage people to bond with it. The concept behind the friendly little robot is described as, “A little LOVE can change the world.”
It stands at about a foot and a half and weighs around 3 kg, resembling a toddler in this regard. In fact, in some ways, it’ll even behave like a toddler. Since the Lovot was designed to operate in a very specific manner, you might notice that there will be times when it’ll come in your way when it wants affection.
You’ll notice that it has innocent and endearing eyes that radiate innocence and a trio of wheels. It also has a pair of flippers that it can use to communicate somewhat, such as indicating to be picked up.
The design philosophy of the Lovot is to make it as lovable and heart-warming as possible. Its quirks, such as wanting to be picked up or expressing affection, are meant to encourage the Japanese concept of skinship (which typically refers to physical contact like hugging).
By making use of advanced technology like Emotional Robotics and combining them with various censors and a six-layered eye display, the Lovot is capable of mimicking almost human-like behaviour. Adding to its adorable quirks, it possesses a thermal camera which allows it to scan a room and immediately find where its owner is.
You won’t see your Lovot helping out with chores around the house, but you will definitely feel a lot happier when it’s around. Groove X is trying to help people develop their nurturing side and provide them with an emotional support companion.
Current plans for the Lovot are a release date of late 2019, with pre-order prices being roughly $3000 along with a deposit of $177 to secure the purchase. These initial shipments for 2019 will provide 2 units for those who purchased them. In 2020, it will be possible to purchase only a single unit.
