Now that the holiday season is upon us, many bakers find themselves making loads and loads of holiday cookies. What’s the best possible topping on one of these delicious holiday delights? Why, of course, it would be Hershey’s Kisses! However, to the shock of many bakers, it seems that some of these famous chocolates are being sold with broken tips.
Admittedly, this has no bearing on the flavour and the chocolate itself is completely fine for consumption, but many bakers are dissatisfied and feel as though the aesthetic value of their cookies is compromised due to the lack of a tip. This sentiment likely stems from the hard work that is required of them at this time of year.
Many took to social media and aired their displeasure with the current look of the chocolate with some groups even reaching out to Hershey’s itself. While it remains unclear how many “casualties” there are of this situation, a spokesperson has gone on record to say that the situation is going to be addressed and that the company is looking at it with a great deal of seriousness.
In an attempt to control some of the backlash, Hershey’s increased its social media presence by interacting with bakers across the country and reassuring them that their complaints will be addressed and that an investigation is underway. However, it took this a step further and made something of a PR blunder when it posted a picture of different Kisses, some with normal tips and others with broken tips. The idea was to frame it as an “accept diversity” narrative. However, none of its customers were amused by this and this did nothing to help settle the situation.
Beckman, a spokesman for the company, has shared that Hershey’s generally receives 8,000 customer inquiries on a monthly basis. In light of this entire debacle, for the month of December, at least 2 percent of these complaints all revolve around the tip-less Kisses. Beckman was also able to share that only solid chocolate Kisses were impacted, while those with filling remain unaffected.
