Trump Pokes Fun at Farm Bill 15 Minutes Before He Signs It
By now, most people have come to expect a certain kind of shenanigans from President Trump. Even so, every now and then, he manages to surprise everyone beyond their expectations.
No one is ignorant of Trump’s ineptitude at carrying himself with grace on social media platforms, but his recent stint has stirred up controversy, awkwardness and, quite frankly, confusion. On Friday, just after midnight, Trump tweeted a video of himself performing a skit on stage for the 2005 Emmy Awards with Megan Mullally.
The video includes him dressed in overalls, wearing a straw hat and holding a pitchfork in his hand. He stands on stage gleefully singing the tune of the Green Acres theme with the lyrics reworked to include references to himself. The tweet is captioned that he’s signing the farm bill in 15 minutes with the hashtags #Emmys and #TBT.
The tweet is followed with a haze of confusion and embarrassment. Megan Mullally wasn’t too far behind with her tweet, “if [sic] you guys need me, i’ll [sic] be in a hole in the ground.”
While some found it funny, others seemed lost on his sense of humor. Most people reacted with shock and confusion for the inappropriate poke at the farm bill, a piece of legislation that will help relieve the burden on the farming industry.
Given his nature, this isn’t really an uncharacteristic stint for him. It combines all the usual elements, i.e., mild ignorance, a sense of vanity, and a severe lack of decorum. With no one to stop him, tweets like this have really become the norm.
What’s really confusing here is the intent. Is this really an attempt at some self-deprecating humor or a failed parody? The video itself provides very little connection to the bill itself other than the farm attire. The fact of the matter is, if this was anyone else, we would have some remnants of a clue, but with Donald Trump at the helm, no one can really tell anymore.
