If you’re a fan of Sherlock Holmes, the chances are that you have already heard about the recently launched movie Holmes & Watson and how the movie is an unending downward spiral. It is no surprise that when a film depicting Sherlock Holmes is launched, people are bound to have high expectations. However, Holmes & Watson generally got really bad reviews from viewers and there’s a good reason behind that.
The film features Will Ferrell as Sherlock Holmes and John C. Reilly as Holmes’ sidekick, John Watson. Though both the actors seemed to work out for Adam McKay’s Step Brothers, they certainly did not for this movie. If you are expecting to watch a good parody of Sherlock Holmes, this movie is going to disappoint you big time.
Not only are both leads painfully unfunny to watch, but whether or not the movie falls into the “comedy” genre itself is a question. The movie is 89 minutes long, and the whole movie basically includes different versions of the same gag. Throughout the movie, the main leads can be seen struggling with their awful English accents. More than half the movie focuses on the main leads trying to make funny jokes that actually turn out to be terrible. There are some scenes that would gross out the audience instead of making them laugh such as the scene where Holmes keeps barfing in the bucket or the scene where the trajectory of Holmes’ arching urine is calculated in slow motion.
There were a few scenes that could have turned out to be funny if they were properly directed such as the one where Watson tries to dictate a late-night, drunk, written telegram to Dr Hart or the visit to the Diogenes Club. Such scenes could be good humor if the timing was right.
If your expectations are to watch another Talladega Nights or Step Brothers, you will be sorely disappointed. There is not a single aspect in which it could be said that the movie is worth watching. It wouldn’t be a crime to call the movie a complete failure. The movie offers nothing genuine and innovative. The whole screening time is a repeated cycle of jokes and gags that fall flat.
Overall, the movie is pervaded by a lazy and boring vibe and it is filled with awful, slapstick humor. All the backlash and negative reviews that the movie received can be justified as it is, by far, the most disappointing and worst feature-length film made on Sherlock Holmes.
