Not too long ago in December 2018, Malwarebytes users on Windows 7 began encountering errors on their operating system. Windows would “freeze” at random times. This means that their keyboard, mouse, and screen would become completely unresponsive, leaving the computer unusable. The only way to make the system operational again would be to press down on the power button and restart the whole system. It would seem that the problem was afflicting those users who had the Web Protection feature switched on.
Initially, the company struggled to understand the nature of the problem as they were unable to recreate the conditions that led to the error. They even requested users to submit their data so that it could be analyzed for some kind of solution. Ultimately, they were able to figure it out and determined that there was some kind of problem with the multi-processor synchronization.
The statement they issued on the subject read as follows: “We’ve now been able to consistently reproduce the freeze in house on more systems and we believe we have narrowed the problem to multi-processor synchronization issues with our web protection code on Windows 7. We have an updated version of Malwarebytes that we’re currently testing, so far with encouraging results.”
After running tests in house, they tested the systems with an updated version of Malwarebytes and met with success as the systems were no longer freezing. Prior to this, users were advised to either revert to an older version of Malwarebytes or disable Malwarebytes for Windows Web Protection.
A test preview build was developed to deal with the problem and after testers reported promising results, a pre-beta version was released to those who wanted to try a test run. It would seem that the company successfully resolved the situation as the update happened to fix the problem completely.
Presently, the company is encouraging all users to download the latest update which is the version 1.0.527 of the component package 3.6.1. Malwarebytes users on Windows 7 are specifically advised to update their version of the software so that they could be free from the freezing issue and be able to use their computer again without any issues.
Windows 7 users can finally sigh with relief that the problem has been fixed.
