Amidst Russia’s ongoing aggression towards Ukraine, the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant has amplified its production of 155 mm howitzer rounds by an impressive 50%, reaching a monthly output of 36,000 rounds. Investment in Modernization

Alongside the production surge, the plant is undergoing a $400 million modernization project. This investment will enhance its capabilities and efficiency, further cementing its role as a critical supplier of artillery munitions. One notable addition is a state-of-the-art machine that will triple production capacity, optimizing space utilization within the expansive 500,000-square-foot facility.

Vital Ammunition for Ukraine

The 155 mm howitzer rounds produced at the Scranton plant play a pivotal role in Ukraine’s defense against Russia. The United States has provided over 3 million rounds since 2022, and the latest $125 million weapons package includes additional shell deliveries. These shells are essential for counteracting enemy artillery and providing cover for Ukrainian forces.

A Historic Journey

The Scranton Army Ammunition Plant has a rich history, dating back to its origins as a locomotive repair shop at the turn of the 20th century. In the wake of the Korean War, the U.S. Army transformed the facility into a large-caliber artillery production hub. General Dynamics has operated the plant since 2006 on behalf of the U.S. government.
