Starbucks eliminates North America CEO position after anemic demand
Starbucks North America Chief Executive Officer Retires
On Monday, Starbucks announced the retirement of Michael Conway, its North America Chief Executive Officer. Conway’s departure follows approximately 11 years of dedicated service to the coffeehouse chain.
Transition Amidst Turnaround Plan
This move coincides with the implementation of the turnaround plan initiated by newly appointed CEO Brian Niccol. Niccol’s plan prioritizes enhancing Starbucks’ operations within the United States. Conway assumed the role of North America CEO in April 2023, amidst declining demand for Starbucks’ premium lattes in the U.S. market.
Niccol’s Focus on Core Operations
In an open letter, Niccol outlined his initial focus on ensuring timely delivery of food and beverages at U.S. stores, while also restoring the coffeehouse ambiance at Starbucks outlets.
Organizational Restructuring
Upon Conway’s retirement, the North America CEO role will not be filled. Instead, Sarah Trilling, the current head of North America retail operations, will report directly to Niccol.
Consultant Advisor Role
Conway will continue to serve as an executive advisor to Starbucks until the end of 2024.
Conway’s Past Experiences
Prior to holding the position of North America CEO, Conway held several key roles within Starbucks, including Group President of International and Channel Development, President of Starbucks Canada, and President of Licensed Stores for the U.S. and Latin America.
