China sanctions United States over weapons trade
China Announces Sanctions against US Firms over Taiwan Arms Sales
Beijing has imposed sanctions on nine US military-linked companies in retaliation for the United States’ continued arms sales to Taiwan. The sanctions, which took effect on Wednesday, will freeze the firms’ assets within China and prohibit Chinese entities from engaging in transactions with them.
China’s Stance on Taiwan and Arms Sales
China maintains that Taiwan is an integral part of its territory and has repeatedly condemned the United States’ arms sales to the island, which Beijing views as interference in its internal affairs. China has called on the US to cease all formal dealings with Taiwan and has warned that it will take “necessary measures” to protect its sovereignty and interests.
List of Sanctioned Firms
The nine US companies targeted by China’s sanctions include: * Sierra Nevada Corporation * Stick Rudder Enterprises LLC * Cubic Corporation * S3 Aerospace * TCOM Ltd Partnership * TextOre * Planate Management Group * ACT1 Federal * Exovera
China’s Previous Sanctions
China has previously imposed sanctions on other US companies, including Lockheed Martin units, for selling arms to Taiwan. The Chinese government has also lodged a complaint with the United States over the matter and has threatened to take further action if the US does not withdraw its arms sales.
China’s Increased Pressure on Taiwan
In recent years, China has significantly increased its military and political pressure on Taiwan. The Chinese military has conducted numerous exercises near the island, and Beijing has stepped up its diplomatic efforts to isolate Taiwan internationally. China’s actions have been met with strong opposition from the United States and its allies, who view them as a threat to regional stability.
Taiwan’s Rejection of China’s Claims
Taiwan, which is a self-governed democracy, strongly rejects China’s territorial claims and has vowed to defend its independence. The Taiwanese government has expressed concern over China’s military buildup and has called on the international community to support its right to self-determination.
Call for US to Cease Taiwan Connivance
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, has urged the United States to “immediately stop the dangerous trend of arming Taiwan” and to “stop conniving and supporting Taiwan independence.” Lin warned that the US’s actions are undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
