Mom Indicted in Connection with School Shooting
Indictment of Mother in Connection with School Shooting
Marcee Gray, the mother of Colt Gray, the 14-year-old accused of fatally shooting four people at Apalachee High School, has been indicted in connection with an alleged domestic incident. The indictment, handed down Monday in Ben Hill County, charges Gray with exploiting an elderly person and other crimes.
Separate Incident from School Shooting
The indictment appears to be unrelated to the school shootings, which occurred in a different Georgia county nearly 200 miles away. Colt Gray was arrested on September 4th after surrendering to police at the high school. Authorities allege that he brought an assault-style rifle to school and opened fire during morning classes, killing two students and two teachers and injuring nine others.
Domestic Incident Details
The indictment stems from an incident reported by Gray’s 74-year-old mother in November 2022. According to a police incident report, Gray allegedly took her mother’s phone, taped her to a chair, and left her unattended for almost a full day. The report indicates that Gray then traveled to Barrow County to confront her ex-husband, with whom their son and two other children resided.
Arrests and Charges
Records show that Gray was arrested in Barrow County two days after the incident. She pleaded guilty to charges of criminal trespassing, using a license plate to disguise her car, and causing property damage, and was sentenced to 45 days in jail.
Mother’s Statements
Following the school shootings, Marcee Gray stated that she had called her son’s high school that morning to warn staff after receiving a text message from Colt Gray saying, “I’m sorry.” She later issued a statement claiming, “My son is not a monster.”
Father’s Charges
Colt Gray’s father, Colin Gray, has also been charged with involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of cruelty to children. Authorities have stated that he gave his son access to the rifle used in the shootings.
Legal Representation
It is not known at this time if Marcee Gray has retained an attorney. Messages left at possible phone numbers for Gray have not been returned.
