Maine Woman and Dog Rescued After Days Lost in Forest
On Thursday afternoon, Maine authorities successfully rescued 72-year-old Pamela Helmstadter, who had been missing in a forest with her husband and their dog for four days. Tragically, her 82-year-old husband, John Helmstadter, was found deceased in the woods less than 200 yards from his wife.
Missing Couple Leaves for Walk
The couple had embarked on a Sunday morning walk with their dog, following trails behind their home in Alexander, Maine. During their hike, John fell and was unable to get up. Without a cellphone, Pamela left to seek help.
Search and Rescue Operation
Authorities were alerted after a neighbor noticed an undelivered package belonging to the couple. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife initiated a search for the missing duo on Thursday. A game warden and his K-9 located Pamela suffering from hypothermia, accompanied by her loyal dog.
Rescue and Recovery
“When the K-9 team located her, her dog was being very protective of her and even laid down on top of her,” said Sgt. Josh Beal of the Maine Warden Service. Pamela’s dog, who has been credited with helping her survive the cold nights, remained alert and provided information about the incident.
Difficult Conditions
The search and rescue operation took place amid challenging conditions. “It rained all day Monday, we had cooler temperatures,” explained Beal. “Wednesday night, it was 27 to 28 degrees. She did very well to survive for that long.”
Investigation and Tributes
The Maine Warden Service is currently investigating the incident. Tributes have poured in for John Helmstadter, a retired Navy veteran and avid outdoorsman. “John loved the woods. He spent a lot of time in the woods,” said friend Larry Carver.
Resilient Spirit
Pamela Helmstadter’s resilience and determination have been praised by authorities. “She’s a tough old bird. She’s 72 years old, and she walked out of the woods on her own power,” said Beal. “She’s a very strong lady.”
Call for Caution
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared when adventuring in the wilderness. Authorities urge hikers to carry cell phones, inform others of their plans, and be aware of potential hazards.
