North Korean Flag Raises Fear in Ukraine’s Frontline
The Red-Blue Five-Pointed Star Flag of North Korea has become an alarming sight in the war-torn landscape of eastern Ukraine. A blurry photograph allegedly captured near the embattled city of Pokrovsk depicts the North Korean flag flying alongside the Russian tricolour, instilling fear among seasoned Ukrainian fighters.
North Korea’s Support for Russia
Throughout the conflict, North Korea has been a steadfast ally of Russia, providing financial assistance, artillery shells, and signing a mutual defense agreement. Recent reports suggest that Pyongyang may have deployed troops not only to Russia, but potentially to Ukrainian frontlines.
Unconfirmed Sightings of North Korean Soldiers
Military officials outside Pokrovsk have reported sightings of individuals resembling eastern Asians, indicating a significant increase in Russian soldiers. A soldier known as “Pecheneg” shared a Telegram message from the Ukrainian army displaying North Korean ranks and uniforms, adding, “There is no direct confirmation, but we’re being prepared for it.”
Ukraine’s Uncertainty and US Confirmation
Ukrainian authorities have yet to confirm the presence of North Korean soldiers in Ukraine, while Pecheneg expressed skepticism about the image of the flag. However, the US has confirmed that 3,000 North Korean soldiers are currently in Russia, with their numbers expected to grow to 10,000 by December.
Potential Significance of North Korean Involvement
The combat experience of North Korean soldiers remains unproven, as their last full-scale engagement occurred during the Korean War 71 years ago. Nonetheless, their sheer quantity could provide Russia with a strategic advantage. Dr Edward Howell, an expert on North Korea, believes their involvement signifies an enduring anti-Western coalition.
Preparing for the Worst in Pokrovsk
Residents of Pokrovsk brace for the prospect of fighting on their streets. Despite once housing 80,000 people, Pokrovsk is now nearly deserted, with only a few elderly residents and Ukrainian soldiers in sight. The constant roar of artillery serves as a reminder of the ongoing conflict, and should Moscow occupy Pokrovsk, it would disrupt vital supply lines for Ukrainian troops.
Lives Disrupted in Pokrovsk
Much of Pokrovsk lacks electricity and internet access. With limited resources and few options for relocation, many residents feel trapped. Leonid Zakharovich, a pastor at the evangelical church Awakening, has provided shelter to displaced people who have lost everything. “We believe in God and the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and we believe that they [Russians] will not come here,” Zakharovich said. “According to the Bible, you should not violate your neighbor’s boundary. [Putin] invaded Ukraine, which means he is from the devil.”
