Missing Hawaii Woman’s Case Takes Twist
The case of Hannah Kobayashi, a missing Hawaii woman who has been the subject of a large search effort in Los Angeles, took a dramatic turn when police announced they had footage of her crossing into Mexico.
Kobayashi’s Missing Person Status
According to Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell, Kobayashi walked through the U.S.-Mexico border voluntarily on November 12, days after missing her connecting flight to New York. She has been classified as a voluntary missing person, and the department will halt its investigation while she is out of the country.
No Evidence of Foul Play
McDonnell emphasized that there is no evidence of abduction, foul play, or human trafficking involving Kobayashi. While no definitive motive has been established, he mentioned that she had expressed a desire to disconnect from “modern connectivity” and left her phone behind.
Chronology of Kobayashi’s Whereabouts
From November 8 to 11, surveillance footage and imagery showed Kobayashi at various locations in Los Angeles. She was seen at the Taschen bookstore, an event at The Grove, and a Nike promotional video.
Concerning Text Messages
Family and police received concerning text messages after Kobayashi missed her flight. The messages, which contained unusual phrases and lacked emojis, were considered out of character.
Journey to Mexico
McDonnell stated that Kobayashi purchased a bus ticket at Los Angeles Union Station on November 11 and used her passport to do so. She traveled to San Ysidro in San Diego the next day and crossed the border into Mexico at 12:13 p.m. on November 12.
Father’s Tragic Death
On November 24, Kobayashi’s father, Ryan Kobayashi, was found dead in an apparent suicide near Los Angeles International Airport. The family expressed shock and sadness over his passing.
No Evidence of Family Involvement
McDonnell noted that there is no evidence to suggest that the family played a role in Kobayashi’s disappearance or departure from the country.
Police Appeal to Kobayashi
The LAPD urges Kobayashi to contact her family, law enforcement, or personnel at the U.S. Embassy to confirm her safety and well-being. They respect her right to privacy but understand her loved ones’ concerns.
Ongoing Investigation
Kobayashi’s missing person case remains active until her safety is confirmed. The Missing and Unidentified Persons System will continue to monitor the situation.
