India Probes Starlink in Major Drug Smuggling Case

Police in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have issued a legal demand to Starlink, seeking details of the purchaser of an internet device used to navigate a Myanmar boat carrying $4.2 billion worth of methamphetamine. The notice requests information including the purchaser’s name, payment method, registration details, and usage records during the smuggler’s journey from Myanmar to India.

First Use of Starlink in Drug Haul

The incident has raised concerns as it represents the first known use of Starlink’s technology in a major drug haul. Starlink, operated by Musk’s SpaceX, offers satellite broadband services and is currently seeking regulatory approval to launch in India.

Musk’s Ambitious Plans in India

The investigation comes amid efforts by Starlink to address security concerns and secure regulatory approval for its India operations. The company recently emerged victorious in a lobbying battle with Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Platforms over satellite spectrum allocation.

Drug Seizure Details

In late November, police in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands seized over 6,000 kg of meth from a Myanmar boat. The vessel was found equipped with a Starlink Mini internet device, which is claimed by Starlink to function in international waters. The seized meth is estimated to have a market value of 360 billion rupees ($4.25 billion).

Police Seek Information

According to sources with direct knowledge of the police notice, Andaman police have invoked an Indian law that empowers authorities to request information from companies in connection with investigations. The notice seeks the purchaser’s mobile number, email ID, and details of the Starlink account.

The ongoing investigation aims to identify the individuals responsible for the smuggling operation and determine the extent of their involvement with Starlink. The authorities are also examining potential security loopholes that may have enabled the use of Starlink technology for illicit purposes.
