Arson at Changi Airport Holding Room
On December 12th, at approximately 2:15 AM, a 33-year-old Australian male was arrested at Changi Airport Terminal 2 for setting fire to curtains in a holding room. The incident was reported to the police, who were notified of a violent male passenger at the holding room.
Verbal Abuse and Arson
According to police, the man was verbally abusive towards auxiliary police officers after his request for a cigarette was denied. Prior to the arrival of police, the man allegedly removed curtain blinds from the holding room and ignited them using his lighter. He threatened to spread the flames if his demands were not met.
Confrontation with Officers
Upon their arrival, officers from the Airport Police Division extinguished the fire. However, the man allegedly engaged in a confrontation with the officers, spraying a fire extinguisher in their direction. The man will be charged on Friday for mischief by fire with intent to cause damage, an offense that carries a sentence of up to seven years in prison and a fine.
Investigation and Zero Tolerance
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with the man potentially facing additional criminal charges. Assistant Commissioner of Police M Malathi, commander of the Airport Police Division, emphasized the police’s zero tolerance for violent acts against officers and endangering public safety. “We will not hesitate to take firm action against those who blatantly disregard the law,” she stated.
Call for Public Cooperation
Authorities urge the public to report any suspicious activities or individuals. The Singapore Police Force encourages cooperation in maintaining safety and order at Changi Airport and other public areas.
