Simplified Visa Requirements for Americans Visiting China
China has extended its visa-free transit policy, allowing citizens of 54 countries, including the United States, to stay in the country for up to 10 days without a visa. This policy applies to travelers who continue their journey to a third country or region. The eligible areas for visa-free transit have also been expanded to include 21 additional ports of entry and exit and five more destinations.
Restrictions on Visa-Free Transit
While Americans can now visit many parts of China visa-free for 10 days, they must proceed to another country afterward. They cannot travel roundtrip between the U.S. and China without a visa. U.S. citizens planning to visit China for more than 10 days or for any purpose other than transit will still require a visa.

Safety Considerations for Travelers
The U.S. State Department advises travelers that China remains a generally safe country. However, they recommend exercising increased caution due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws, including exit bans. They also note that the tourism industry in China is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities are not always present or up to standard.
