The State Department spokeswoman, Heather Nauert, is to be nominated by President Trump for the United Nations, as Trump advances his agenda of ‘America First’ on the global stage, according to two senior officials.
This means that a complete foreign policy novice would be elevated to the top echelons of the US diplomatic corps, as the US President increases pressure against Iran and expects US allies to take greater responsibility for their own security. Nauert will be expected to maintain international support for the economic sanctions against North Korea in her new role and continue the support for Israel.
Nauert has no prior government experience and joined the State Department last year after being a correspondent and news anchor on Fox News. Nauert worked as an ABC reporter and joined Fox in 1996. Trump is one of the biggest fans of her show and often quotes the hosts of the show in his morning tweets. She will be replacing Nikki Haley, who also had no foreign policy experience but was elected twice as the governor of South Carolina.
Heather Nauert is well-known as a hardcore defender of Trump’s policies, yet she has never had a close working relationship with him. Nor has she ever accompanied him on any overseas trips or participated in his meetings with foreign dignitaries. She is widely thought to be a ‘White House loyalist’ with close ties to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.
Her first year on her job wasn’t easy, and she only came into the limelight when Trump fired Tillerson through his tweet. After one year, she accompanied the Secretary of State to Toronto with John Sullivan, who was the Acting Deputy Secretary of State until Mike Pompeo was confirmed in that role. Pompeo then included her in his inner circle and took her on trips abroad. He promoted her to the Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs.
Nauert’s nomination was initially reported by Bloomberg, but she was unavailable for comment. Critics pounced at her nomination, declaring it to be based on loyalty rather than experience, and many did not consider her suitable for such a senior position. Proponents consider her to be a great advocate for the American people as she is ‘hardworking and smart and never gives up advancing the agenda that works for the US.’
