Jeff Bezos had been under constant fire from the media after Enquirer released news about his affair with Lauren Sanchez last month. Consequently, he and his wife had just announced on social media about their divorce.
However, just last week on Thursday, the famous Amazon CEO and Washington Post owner decided to set things straight in a blog post. He claimed several email as evidence pointing toward the parent company of Enquirer extorting and blackmailing him.
After the post, most media officials agreed that the CEO did a brave job by going public with the blackmail story and highlighting how corrupt the American media’s activities were. “What an incredibly effective response to extortion,” was the response of Ben Smith, Buzzfeed Editor-in-Chief.
What Did the Emails Contain?
The emails contained several ongoing conversations between Bezos and the media company’s lawyer with them threatening to release pictures and personal data as an attempt to extort him. In one email, the lawyer proposed to Bezos that he would deny the Enquirer’s move as ‘politically motivated’ and in exchange, they would not release his personal information.
Bezos had hired a security expert named Gavin de Becker, who was responsible for finding out how his personal data was leaked. The investigator concluded that the leak was politically motivated. A leader at American Media Inc (AMI), the owner of the National Enquirer, then informed Jeff Bezos that AMI CEO David Pecker was furious about this investigation and claimed they had more personal information to release.
Is It the First Time That This Happened?
Ronan Farrow, a famous name in the journalism community, tweeted that this was not the first time something like this had happened. AMI had previously threatened him and another prominent journalist for their investigations into Trump.
The Daily Beast has also been victim to AMI’s unorthodox methods of communicating ‘their message.’ Its staff were investigating these leaks when they were threatened by the media giant to shut down.
Any Other Sources?
Jeff Bezos now claims that there have indeed been other victims of AMI’s blackmailing attempts. He says that people are opening up more and more after his blog post, “No thank you, Mr. Pecker.” These individuals had to give in to the blackmails since their livelihood was at stake, but are now confident that with a man like Bezos on their side, they could get justice now.
Crime or No Crime?
Here is where the situation becomes tricky. Federal prosecutors are not prone to accept the case as extortion. Lawyer Jeffrey Toobin commented “I don’t know,” when asked about the case. It seems as if the media giant might just get away because of loopholes in the law.
