Irvine California customizing Tesla Cybertruck for at least $140,000.
Irvine Police Department’s Cybertruck Purchase
The Irvine Police Department in California has reportedly spent a minimum of $140,000 on acquiring and customizing a Tesla Cybertruck, according to a Forbes report. The department opted for the top-of-the-line Cyberbeast model, valued at $99,990, and further invested $20,000 in the “Foundation Series” package. This package includes exclusive amenities like Foundation Series badges and a glass roof sunshade.
Cybertruck Modifications
In addition to the initial purchase, Irvine PD retained the services of Unplugged Performance, a renowned Tesla modification company, for an additional $20,000. This investment enabled the integration of essential law enforcement equipment into the Cybertruck, including car lighting, radios, and exterior graphics. The department’s social media presence teased the impending arrival of the customized Cybertruck in July 2024.
Publicity Tool or Active Patrolling Vehicle
A spokesperson for the Irvine Police Department clarified that the Foundation Series model was the only available option at the time of purchase. Moreover, the department emphasized that its Cybertruck would primarily serve as a publicity tool for the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program, rather than being deployed for active patrolling duties.
Cybertruck as a Police Vehicle
The concept of utilizing the Cybertruck as a police vehicle has gained traction over time. Notable figures such as Oracle founder Larry Ellison and Tesla CEO Elon Musk have expressed their support for the idea. However, concerns remain regarding the effectiveness of the Cybertruck in this role, particularly given its perceived durability as an “apocalypse-proof” vehicle.
Durability and Performance Concerns
Despite Musk’s claims of the Cybertruck being bulletproof, tests conducted by JerryRigEverything revealed its vulnerability to larger caliber weapons. The vehicle has also faced scrutiny for its off-roading capabilities, with viral videos showcasing instances of it struggling in snowy conditions, getting stuck on beaches, and encountering difficulties ascending dirt hills.
Ongoing Challenges
Since its launch, the Cybertruck has faced a series of setbacks, including multiple recalls. Concerns have been raised about potential jamming of the accelerator pedal. Tesla has not yet provided a response to inquiries regarding these issues, as the request was sent outside of regular business hours.
