Putin Prohibits Foreign Adoptions to Countries Permitting Gender Transition
President Vladimir Putin has enacted legislation that prohibits the adoption of Russian children by citizens of countries where gender transitioning is legal. The adoption ban extends to at least 15 countries, primarily European nations, as well as Australia, Argentina, and Canada.
Crackdown on Child-Free Propaganda
Putin also approved legislation that criminalizes the dissemination of materials advocating for a child-free lifestyle. The law imposes substantial fines on individuals or organizations promoting arguments against parenthood. This move is seen as part of a broader effort to combat Western influences perceived as weakening Russia’s population growth.
Reinforcing Traditional Values
The adoption ban and anti-child-free propaganda measures align with Putin’s increasingly vocal support for so-called traditional values. Amidst Russia’s declining population, he has encouraged the formation of large families, urging women to have up to eight children.
Suppression of LGBTQ+ Rights
Russia’s recent crackdown on LGBTQ+ rights has intensified with the passage of these latest laws. Gender-transition medical procedures have been banned, and the LGBTQ+ movement has been labeled extremist by the Supreme Court. In 2022, Putin further restricted the distribution of LGBTQ+ information to people of all ages.
Anti-Western Rhetoric
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Putin has repeatedly denounced the West as “satanic.” He has accused Western nations of attempting to undermine Russia by promoting liberal ideologies, including the acceptance of LGBTQ+ rights and gender transition.
Pressure on Dissent
Independent journalists, critics, activists, and opposition figures in Russia have faced escalating government pressure, which has intensified significantly during the Ukraine conflict. Hundreds of nongovernmental groups and individuals have been designated as “foreign agents,” a label that implies government scrutiny and carries negative connotations.
